Increasing Your Hip Flexibility

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

Having tight hips is becoming one of the most common ailments amongst adults, as well as lower back pain and knee pain.

A major cause of tight hips is due to the fact we spend so much time sitting in chairs. This has caused the joint capsule to shrink becoming smaller, shorter and tighter. Therefore leading other muscles and joints to compensate, taking on more work than they can handle. For example the lower back and the knee.

By regaining the range of motion in our hips, slowly and overtime we can begin to reduce the stress on the knees and lower back and minimise discomfort.

Introducing Yin Yoga poses into your daily life could help you to begin to recover what was lost and to help strengthen and lengthen the ligaments of the hips. Also begin to sit on the floor as often as possible. It doesn't matter how you sit or how many times you change your posture. You will receive many benefits including keeping your hip and knee joint healthy and also strengthening your core muscles.

Some poses that are great for the hips are square, swan and the dragons. Always apply the Yin Yoga principles when attempting any poses. (You can find the principles on the Why I Teach Yin Yoga? post.).

I am offering a FREE Yin Yoga sequence designed to help increase your hip flexibility. This comes with step by step instructions and also the benefits of each pose.

Perhaps give these poses a try and let me know how you go. I would love to hear from you :)

Please remember any pain is a big NO! Always listen to your body! We are all structured differently. What may appear to not look flexible, may be flexible enough for your body at this moment.
